Data Management - Integrated Reporting of Wildfire Information (IRWIN)

Overview

What is IRWIN?

Integrated Reporting of Wildland Fire Information (IRWIN) is a Wildland Fire Information and Technology (WFIT) affiliated investment intended to provide an “end-to-end” fire reporting capability. IRWIN is tasked with providing data exchange capabilities between existing applications used to manage data related to wildland fire incidents.

IRWIN is focused on the goals of reducing redundant incident data entry, identifying authoritative data sources, and improving the consistency, accuracy, and availability of operational data. By interconnecting systems, new and updated information is automatically available to the different interagency systems and to a dashboard to provide queries and reports. This capability supports a number of needs and provides benefits throughout the wildland fire community.

IRWIN can be thought of as a central hub that orchestrates data between the various applications. Users continue to utilize existing applications. Data is synchronized between participating applications to ensure the most current data is available in near real time. IRWIN supports conflict detection and resolution on all new wildfire incidents to support a unique record for each incident as well as for resources.

The initial implementation of IRWIN was in May of 2014, with a limited number of systems. Additional systems continue to be added to the integrated community as well as additional APIs. Currently IRWIN supports Incident, Resource, Frequency and coming soon Learning Management Systems!!!

IRWIN Observer

Observer is a tool for discovering IRWIN incidents and resources and understanding the data exchange transactions that have occurred. Observer is available for all three IRWIN environments, and can be used to interact with both root and next versions of the IRWIN APIs. Access to IRWIN Observer is granted using a GeoPlatform account.

Observer is intended for use by IRWIN connected systems and NWCG affiliated agencies. Access outside of these parameters can be achieved through the NIFC open data site (https://data-nifc.opendata.arcgis.com/). The tool is designed to support data quality and synchronization for connected systems and is not intended to provide a data set.
